My husband and I love to visit different restaurants in the area. When the kids are in a genial enough mood, we arrange for a sitter and hightail it to an evening of wining and dining. This time around, to celebrate my thirty (something)-th birthday, I needed some fancy cocktails and tasty Mexican food. We headed to a new (to us) upscale Mexican restaurant with high hopes… And we were not disappointed!
Beautiful appetizers, awesome main dishes, and stellar desserts accompanied by delicious margaritas awaited us. Even though the food was amazing, it was the cocktails that really impressed me. I went home and started brainstorming… The combination of fresh acidic citrus juices, soda, and tequila inspired our newest house cocktail, an Orange Paloma, or Orange & Lime Tequila Cocktail.
A riff on a traditional Paloma (which usually contains tequila, grapefruit, lime juice, and agave syrup), this bold drink has lovely citrus notes, and a bold tequila punch. Yummy San Pellegrino Aranciata (orange) sparkling water intensifies the natural vibrancy of the fresh orange juice and the lime balances out the sweetness. This drink is super easy to make…and even easier to drink! I know what I’ll be sipping on for Cinco de Mayo!
Amazing Orange Paloma
makes 1 drink
2 ounces freshly squeezed orange juice (I used a blend of navel & cara cara oranges)
1 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
2 ounces of silver or blanco tequila (I used Don Julio Blanco, yum)
1 1/2 ounces of San Pellegrino Aranciata (orange) sparkling fruit water
1 teaspoon agave syrup or 1 teaspoon of simple syrup
ice
lime or orange wedges for garnish
Note: San Pellegrino Aranciata Rossa (Blood Orange) can be substituted for the orange flavored soda. It’s a little sweeter and gives the drink a pinkish color.
Fill your chosen cocktail glass with ice.
In a cocktail shaker (or, for those of us who can’t find their cocktail shaker, an empty jelly jar with a lid. Don’t judge), combine the lime juice, agave, fresh orange juice, tequila and a few cubes of ice.
Close and shake vigorously for 30-60 seconds, or until completely chilled.
Pour the mix into your cocktail glass and fill the remaining space with the Aranciata sparkling water. Garnish with a lime or orange wedge.
Optional: You can rim your glass by running a lime wedge around and then dip into sugar or salt (but do it before mixing up and pouring your cocktail!).
Enjoy!
